Backup: Small residential home

Improve the quality of your life, with uninterrupted power.

In some regions, brown-outs, black-outs or load-shedding have become an unfortunate part of daily reality. The presence of a stable electricity grid is not as common as it should be. Fortunately there are now affordable and scalable solutions that provide uninterrupted clean power from the smallest homes to the largest luxury villas.

Backup systems seamlessly switch over from (failing) grid power to battery power so fast you and your most critical appliances won’t even notice. The system is sized to power the critical loads during the expected ‘down times’. Solar energy can extend the up-time and if needed, a generator can be seamlessly integrated, minimising their usage automatically by prioritising solar energy.

Non-stop reliable backup power

for a small residential home

In this example we take you through a backup solution for a typical 2-4 person household, equipped with basic AC appliances, such as a TV, lights, toaster, kettle and a small fridge. While some choices become obvious after calculating the energy consumption during the backup period and required peak power, others may require a bit more thought.

Backup Energy consumption

2kWh

Peak power requirement

3000W

In this example

The energy consumption is calculated by adding up the sum of the essential consumers X the expected duration of a black-out. Add all the Watts of the simultaneously used consumers to calculate the required peak power.

Off-grid sizing tip:

In existing installations, ask your installer to install an energy logger to make a blueprint of your real-life energy behaviour, to exactly know what to plan for.

Why is the EasySolar-II a good inverter for a backup system?

Developed as an all-in-one solar power solution, the EasySolar range combines a built in inverter, charger and MPPT and is a great choice for backup, off-grid and self-consumption systems with solar. This all-in-one enclosure combines inverting, shore- and solar charging. It is built for professional duty and optimised to be easily installed with a minimum of wiring. Its Pure Sine Wave technology safely powers sensitive electronics such as computers and any load problem free. A seamless switching UPS function makes sure the batteries take over when the grid fails. In ESS mode, the device will optimise power from solar energy, extending the uptime and bringing you further away from the grid and lower electricity bills. The EasySolar range comes with several options in size and connectivity options.
The EasySolar will use excess PV power to charge the batteries or to feed power back into the grid and will discharge the battery or use power from the grid to supplement a shortage of PV power. In case of a power outage, the EasySolar will disconnect the grid and continue to supply the loads. Loads that should shut down when AC input power is not available can be connected to a second output. See the main configuration options in the datasheet

EasySolar-II GX 48/3000/35-32 MPPT 250/70. This system works with 48V battery banks, it’s 3000Va AC inverter output capacity which translates into 2400W continuously is perfectly sized for this basic home. It can charge with 35 Amps, and has a 32 Amp maximum input current (thanks to its seamless automatic transfer switch). The built in MPPT can handle a solar array with a maximum PV open circuit voltage of 250V and can charge the batteries with a maximum charge current of 70 Amps, producing a maximum solar yield of 4000W. It’s 5500W max peak power spec leaves room for a greater future demand. All charging values can be set up in line with the components specifications through the VictronConnect app. By adding solar the uptime is also extended, powering the loads partially.
A larger, very common step would be the EasySolar 5000. Smaller is also possible: the EasySolar range offers models for different system voltages (12/24/48). On 12V there is the EasySolar 12/1600, on 24V the Easysolar 24/3000. It is also possible to work with a separate inverter/charger and a MPPT; in that case combine either the Multiplus or Quattro inverter/chargers with a separate SmartSolar MPPT, all can be sized exactly to spec.
All our inverters are renowned for their extreme resilience in the toughest of circumstances. For installations installed in high-temperature environments, please consider the temperature derating factor when sizing your inverter, see the datasheets for more info. Lithium or lead-acid battery bank for this Off-grid system, in what size?

There are many reasons why to choose for either technology. But let’s have a quick glance at the cost-effectiveness and the practical differences.

Cost-effectiveness of Lithium batteries vs lead-acid batteries

When choosing an off-grid battery bank there is primarily the choice in technology: lithium or lead-acid. For off-grid applications, Lithium has quickly become the new standard in larger (residential and commercial) systems because of performance reasons, but also due to their lower cost-per-cycle. For smaller systems the lower cost-per-cycle situation is also true, however the higher upfront investment led many to consider Lead-acid batteries. Due to a continuous downwards price pressure, the tipping point towards Lithium for small off-grid systems is closer than ever and in some regions already there.

Practical differences of Lithium batteries vs lead-acid batteries

    Using Lithium in off-grid systems
    Using Lead-acid in off-grid systems
Lithium is the new standard in larger off-grid systems, because of its reliability, performance in high temperatures, optimal scalability, fast (dis)charging abilities (ideal for solar powered applications) and from an investment perspective: a long cycle life which translates into a lower cost-per-cycle compared to lead-acid. Also, it is relatively ‘maintenance free’, which is often seen as a favourable factor in designing reliable solutions, especially for remote installations. Practically they are way lighter and more compact, ideal for cases with space- or weight restrictions.
    Using Lead-acid in off-grid systems
Lead-acid battery types also are a viable option; off-grid installations have relied on them for years and many still do. While they offer a lower initial investment, they do require more discipline by it’s end-users, ensuring the system is closely monitored, isn’t discharged too deeply, fully charged regularly, internal battery liquids filled. When this is taken care of, lead-acid based systems do provide a safe and reliable option. Looking at the total life cycle of a system, lead-acid batteries often have a higher cost-per-cycle and these days, in some regions, even a higher upfront investment.

Victron Energy offers full flexibility when it comes to selecting an off-grid battery bank of choice. Next to our own range of quality batteries, the choice includes a number of well supported third party Lithium battery manufacturers that can be easily integrated through the use of a GX-device. This flexibility enables our customers to perfectly match their off-grid needs for their unique power situation.

Check the manufacturer's data sheets for the expected cycle life and see what works in your (business) case. Each manufacturer comes from a different background and each may have it’s pros and cons for your local situation (availability, support, performance in hot/cold climates, installability, pricing, etc). Therefore, feel free to reach out to a nearby Victron Authorised installer and ask for their local know-how.

Victron Energy is renowned for support of third party Lithium battery manufacturers. Great efforts are spent to ensure a deep and problem free integration with other brands such as FreedomWON, BYD, Pylontech, MG Energy, to work seamlessly with Victron GX equipment. When working with unsupported brands, a Victron Battery Monitor is recommended to pass on accurate state of charge readings to the wider system. Ask your local authorised installer for recommendations. Check the supported brands Ask your local Victron installer

    Вибір професіоналів

Pylontech US2000 LiFePO4 48V 2400Wh + Cerbo GX: this Lithium module offers a cycle life of ±6000 cycles, before degrading to 80% capacity. It can roughly deliver an effective total of 2 kWh on a system voltage* of 48V to power the loads during a 2,5h black-out (2400kWh * 80% discharge capacity) and can be easily scaled, may the demands for backup power rise. When using a third party Lithium bank, a GX device is mandatory, such as the Cerbo GX. Integrated through a CANbus interface, the GX device is used to set up, manage charge and discharge limits and to exchange error codes and state of charge information.

    * This type of battery module is based on 48V, which requires the 48V version of the EasySolar-II 48/3000 or EasySolar 48/5000. Smaller systems on different system voltages can also be built, see ‘which inverter is a cost-effective solution’.
Upscaling existing Lithium banks can be an option, most managed battery brands enjoy a modular setup. Always check the manufacturer for details and ask your local installer. Generally it is not recommended to add modules to systems that have been running deep discharges for more than 1 year as that causes internal resistance variations.

How much solar works for this ESS, with which MPPT controller?

Backup systems don’t need solar when the batteries are sized properly. However, it can be used to extend the uptime of your system. In an event of a day-time black-out, solar can be used to power a percentage of the loads directly, complemented with energy from the batteries. It is also possible to scale up and power all loads directly from the sun.

Victron Energy solutions come with the advantage that they are modular and extremely flexible. Therefore, you can build your system in line with your budget and grow it in line with your ambitions over time. So the solar array can be installed at commission or later.

    Move away from the grid
How far you wish to move away from the grid is your choice, basically anything between one panel and a fully solar powered system could work for a backup system. Use our solar calculator Ask an installer

Any percentage of solar energy between zero or scaling towards a self-consumption system where the loads are fully powered by solar works. You can build this at commission, or over-time, choose a matching MPPT controller or add another later. The solar yield is also a seasonal thing. In summer there is a better yield than in winter. You could for instance decide to start with 50% of the goal-size solar array in summer and add the other 50% in winter, or install it all at once.

    An example:

    Low-end (backup)
    High-end (self consumption)
Start with one or more Solar modules and upgrade later.
    High-end (self consumption)
Size the solar array with +20% of your related load consumption or towards the max input of your MPPT +20% to rely more on the sun than on the grid.

Geographical location data and panel orientation must be considered.

In the end, how far you wish to move away from the grid depends on your budget and the available physical (roof) space. The larger it is sized in the direction of your actual energy consumption, the more you are lowering your utility bills and improving the cost-effectiveness of your system.

    Вибір професіоналів

EasySolar-II GX 48/3000/35-32 MPPT 250/70: The built in MPPT can handle a solar array with a maximum PV open circuit voltage of 250V and can charge the batteries with a maximum charge current of 70 Amps, producing a maximum solar yield of 4000W. These specs mean you can start on the low-end, extending your backup time, or move towards self consumption, the choice is yours. For maximum sizing of the solar array itself it is recommended to work with +20% compared to the MPPT controller max input, to deal with inefficiencies caused by long cable runs, high temperatures, etc.
When calculating the solar array size and configuration, be sure to also take the Temperature Coefficient of the solar panels into consideration; lower temperatures (for instance in the early morning), can cause the solar panels Voltage to rise. However the Maximum PV Open Circuit Voltage of the MPPT must not be exceeded. Check the manufacturers data sheets for more info.

How to upgrade my backup system to a self-consumption system?

Let the sun pay your bill

With feed-in tariffs decreasing and grid supplies becoming less stable and more expensive, it becomes more attractive to build a self-consumption system that also behaves as a backup system when the grid fails. Move further away from the grid and easily lower your electricity bill with an Energy Storage System (ESS) upgrade, the logical next step compared to a system sized just for backup purposes.

Here are some examples on how a backup system can be sized towards a self consumption ESS system:

An Energy Storage System (ESS) is a logical (larger) next step compared to a backup system, but one before going totally off-grid, as there is mostly a grid present. ESS systems don’t have to be sized to power all the loads in the worst-case like an off-grid system, they target the baseload to optimise solar usage and limit energy import, and use the grid when there is a larger power requirement. In case of grid failure, the system will still provide backup power from the batteries, which is all configurable in great detail.. Learn more about our ESS systems

    Вибір професіоналів

The EasySolar, or any of our inverter/chargers are the perfect choice to start as a backup system and upgrade it to an Energy storage and self-consumption system in a few simple steps:
    01
You can easily expand the solar capacity, to the point where the yield is large enough to power the base loads and recharge the battery bank. As a quick rule of thumb for ESS, the minimum PV array capacity is usually sized in line with the energy consumption but adds 20% to compensate for inefficiencies. Refer to your MPPT datasheet for maximum input parameters.
    Add additional solar panels
    02
The battery bank needs to be upgraded to become large enough to power the base loads during the night, which is usually a longer period than backup systems are sized for. Upscaling with Lithium batteries is possible in some cases*, adding new lead-acid batteries to an existing battery bank is not possible: this requires the existing bank to be replaced entirely.
Add additional batteries to the battery bank
    03
If the demand for power increases, an additional Victron Energy inverter/charger can be installed in parallel to increase the output. Check our parallel and three phase documentation to see how it’s done.
    EasySolar-GX and Multiplus device
Upscaling existing Lithium banks can be an option, most managed battery brands enjoy a modular setup. Always check the manufacturer for details and ask your local installer. Generally it is not recommended to add modules to systems that have been running deep discharges for more than 1 year as that causes internal resistance variations.

How can I rely less on my generator for backup power and bring down my fuel bill?

Many customers may already have a backup generator in place, on which they now fully rely on during black-outs. With the Victron Energy hybrid generator concept you can now become a whole lot less reliant on these noisy, fuel consuming, maintenance heavy polluters. In the hybrid concept, the battery bank and the inverter take the primary role to power the critical loads in case of a grid-failure. Only when the backup batteries reach critical levels (in case of a long black-out), the system can be programmed to auto start/stop the generator, which will then power the loads and charge the batteries back to a certain percentage. With this hybrid concept, your fuel and maintenance bills go down significantly.

Thanks to our inverters with PowerAssist, you can now also choose a smaller generator, the inverter will use additional energy from the battery to power peak loads. With our long list of possible settings to auto start/stop the generator from the GX device, you can even program the system with generator-free times, to avoid the genset from being started in the middle of the night.

    Вибір професіоналів

It is possible to eliminate your generator from this setup. In this case a large solar array and/or more battery storage capacity can provide greater autonomy. If you wish to maintain the existing generator, it depends if your model has an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) built in. If this is the case, the grid is connected to the Generators ATS, and the Generator output to the AC-input of the inverter/charger. The generator can be fully controlled by the GX device. If your generator doesn’t have an ATS, either use an (automatic) AC-transfer switch, a separate battery charger or consider upgrading the EasySolar to a Quattro, which has 2 AC inputs.

How can I (remote) control my system, prevent issues and manage third party battery banks?

GX-devices are the communication centre of an installation, giving you perfect control over all systems components and maximise their performance, no matter where you are. They are also essential to integrate a third party Lithium battery bank.

    Always in perfect control

Through our free VictronConnect app and the Victron Energy Remote Monitoring portal or laptop, you can check the system from local and remote. Monitor the battery state of charge, power consumption, power harvest from PV, generator and mains, or check generator tank levels and temperature measurements. Catch potential issues early by programming alerts and alarms in order to prevent definitive system failure.

To add remote connectivity, the GX device can join an existing WIFI connection. Otherwise, a GX LTE 4G can provide a mobile internet connection for the system and connection to the VRM Portal. It works on 2G, 3G and 4G networks. Smaller systems without GX can do with the GlobalLink 520. It connects 2 VE.Direct enabled devices to VRM without any monthly fees or subscriptions, for the first five years.

When using a supported third party Lithium bank, a GX device is mandatory, such as the Cerbo GX or inverter/charger models that have GX functionality built in. Integrated through a CANbus interface, the GX device connects to the BMS of the battery bank and is used to set up, manage charge and discharge limits and to exchange error codes and state of charge information. Everything to make the battery bank work perfectly together with the wider Victron Energy system

Should or could I separate critical consumers from non-critical consumers in my backup system?

Large energy consumers such as washing machines, pumps, air conditioning, or electric stoves may become a challenge for a limited backup capacity of the battery bank and can probably wait until the grid is back. Most of our inverter/chargers come with 2 AC-outputs, one for the critical loads (lights, fridge, TV, alarm systems, etc) and the second AC output for non essential loads. This way, your battery capacity is ready for the essential loads and your system can be sized in the most cost-effective way.

  • 08

How can I improve the cost-effectiveness of a backup, ESS, or off-grid system?

To improve the cost-effectiveness of a backup, ESS or off-grid system, it’s worth taking a look at the energy consumption side, rather than having to size (and finance) a system to power inefficient devices. A recommendation would be to work with appliances that have an A+ energy rating or ideally higher (A+++) to minimise the use of electrical energy, especially for the larger consumers (Fridge, inverter air conditioners and choose LED lights). It is not uncommon for certain regions (Africa for instance) to choose alternative forms of energy for cooking and (water) heating, such as solar water heating systems or gas, reducing the need for electrical power.

AC devices (single phase)

Every ‘household’ appliance or ‘heavy duty tool’ you would expect at home or at work can also be found in independent energy systems. All these devices need an Alternating Current (230V or 110V) to run.

Some of these devices such as computers can be sensitive to the quality of the inverted power (bad shore- or generator AC-input power can influence this quality negatively). Motor driven or heat generating equipment may require a high start-up current. All our inverters produce a pure sine wave, even when the AC input quality is less good, ensuring that sensitive loads can be powered and enjoy a peak-power of generally 2x of the inverters rated capacity to power even the heaviest of loads, or basically any load, problem free.

A recommendation would be to work with appliances that have an A+ energy rating or ideally higher (A+++) to minimise the use of electrical energy, especially for the larger consumers (Fridge, inverter air conditioners and choose LED lights).

Examples of AC-devices:

  • Heavy duty tools such as a drilling machine or a jigsaw
  • Computers
  • Phone chargers
  • Fridge and freezer
  • Lights
  • Coffee machine
  • Microwave
  • or basically any AC powered device you can think of

Генератор

Generators produce mostly AC current to offer independent electrical power where needed. They help charge the batteries and power the (peak)loads in case of grid or shore power shortings or failure.

In all cases, Victron Energy solutions can help you reduce the reliance on these noisy, fuel consuming and maintenance heavy generators, providing an eco-friendly and cost-saving alternative.

Some smaller systems can now just run on batteries, other systems can do with smaller generators, or less generator time. For larger systems, generators may be an unmissable component in the setup, but the dependence on them can be reduced, for instance by adding solar power or battery backup power, only using the generator when the state of charge is too low, or the (peak) power demand too high.

Victron Energy systems are recognised in the market for their great ability to master hybrid generator concepts, which comes with several advantages:

  • Longer generator free periods.
  • Reduced rating of the generator.
  • Reduces shore power requirement.
  • Uninterrupted AC power on board.
  • Increase redundancy and therefore safety.
  • Easy programming of (multiple) generator start/stop rules, based on a variety of system parameters.

Inverter/Chargers/MPPT

Inverter/charger/MPPT convert DC power from the batteries to AC power, safely powering appliances or heavy duty tools with 230V (or 110V in other markets) and take power from the solar array to charge the battery and/or power loads directly. Their built in charger uses grid, shore or generator power, using the best adaptive charge algorithms for your batteries of any kind.

All Victron Energy inverter/charger/MPPT are developed for professional duty, enjoy a reputation of extreme resilience and are built on decades of field experience in the most demanding conditions. Our extremely resilient inverter/charger/MPPT are the best choice when both inverting and charging from AC inputs (such as shore or grid power, generators or AC-PV inverters) are required and grid usage is to be minimised by adding solar power.

See our inverter/chargers/MPPT's

Service Batteries

The service battery, also called a house battery or battery bank, stores power for the system's consumers, providing autonomous power especially for moments when input power sources aren’t (fully) available.

Victron Energy offers several battery technologies, all designed for professional performance, reliability and long service life in the most demanding environments. They come with a 2 year worldwide warranty and our datasheets offer a fair picture of the performance and expected life cycles, meaning no investment surprises along the way.

Victron Energy also offers full flexibility when it comes to selecting an off-grid battery bank of choice. A large number of well supported third party Lithium battery manufacturers can be easily integrated through the use of a mandatory GX-device. This flexibility enables our customers to perfectly match their off-grid needs for their unique power situation. When working with unsupported brands, a Victron Energy Battery Monitor is required to pass on accurate state of charge readings to the wider system.

While there are multiple technologies to choose between, the main choice is between lead-acid and lithium which mainly depends on the expectations of the performance, cost-per-cycle and physical aspects (size/weight).

  • Choose Lead-Acid when:
  • Use occasionally
  • Lower purchase cost
  • Weight and space are not an issue
  • Normal charging
  • Choose Lithium when:
  • Intense daily demand
  • Lower cost per cycle
  • Weight and space considerations
  • Super fast charging

The above probably cuts 45 years of battery development expertise a bit short, for more info check our deep dive.
